BIO

John is a former oyster farmer in Massachusetts and shrimp producer in Vermont. He has a PhD in marine and estuarine systems ecology from the University of Maryland. His research interests include nutrient cycling, system metabolism, microbial communities and aquaculture in aquatic environments. He is the aquaculture specialist for Lake Champlain Sea Grant where he provides outreach to Vermont and Lake Champlain basin aquaculture producers and policy makers and educates the public on aquaculture. He is also a co-founder the Vermont Aquaculture Association. He is especially interested evaluating novel approaches to land-based aquaculture systems, including new species and products, and assisting producers in applying for funding to benefit their farms. John hikes up Mount Philo every morning and enjoys observing the rhythms of nature and talking to the other early birds.
