Internship Course Information
The courses listed on this page will get you elective Arts & Sciences credit toward your degree. If you are looking to get credit toward your major or minor for an internship, please check the Schedule of Courses to see what internship courses are offered by your academic department.
Fall 2024 Internship Credit:
For internships external to UVM, or with a UVM entity such as an academic department or administrative office, you'll enroll in course number CAS 2991.*
- Section A is for students with any kind of internship and is open to all majors.
*If you are interning with the Community News Service or the Communities of Practice, please see their corresponding page to find the correct course number for these programs.
Registration Instructions for CAS 2991 A
Step 1: Enroll in CAS 2991 A
Step 2: Edit the amount of credit you are enrolled in - IMPORTANT
- CAS 2991 defaults to 1 credit. It is very important that you edit the amount of credit after you enroll. Enroll for 1 credit per 40 hours you plan to work at your internship. (PDF Instructions).
Step 3: Complete the Required Forms:
- College of Arts & Sciences Internship Credit Information Form
- Your internship site supervisor should review and sign the UVM Internship MOU. They will automatically get an email with a link to the forms once you complete the CAS Internship Information Form (above), but a follow-up reminder from you will be very helpful! Please direct any questions to Kelly Smith.
The information below is not necessary for registration, but might be helpful for your planning:
- Please note that this class is listed as hybrid as most of the work will be done independently on Bright Space; however, you will be required to meet four times in person through the semester.

Summer Internship Credit
Do you have an internship that runs between May and August? Enroll in CAS 2991 OL1 to earn credit. Please reach out to Kelly Smith with any questions.

Do I qualify for internship credit?
You ARE eligible for internship credit if your internship is...
- Paid (either by the organization, via UVM internship scholarship, or via external scholarship or stipend)
- Unpaid*
- Remote
- In-Person
- Hybrid (some remote and some in-person work)
*If your internship employer does not offer to pay you at least minimum wage, you might ask them about other forms of compensation. Some internships offer stipends, which is a fixed amount of money delivered in a lump sum, used to cover expenses (e.g. a $1,000 stipend for the semester). Other allotments may include housing, food, or vouchers for gym memberships, bus passes, etc. It can’t hurt to ask and credit is available for internships under all of these arrangements.
Internships that qualify for credit are...
- ... one-time experience lasting 1-10 months
- ... distinguished from a job or volunteer work by a defined "learning agenda" that structures the experience and allows the student to get a real sense of the larger structure and impact of the organization on the community, clients, or other stakeholders
- ... supervised on-site by a dedicated mentor who will ensure the student completes their "learning agenda" and is supported throughout the experience
- ... not interchangeable with positions that the company or organization would normally hire a part-time worker for (i.e. a cashier, stockist, or cleaning position with no additional learning opportunities or observations of higher-level work)
Internships for credit must be with companies or organizations that are able to sign our UVM Internship MOU (i.e. legal entities or sole proprietorship with proper insurance coverage).

College of Arts & Sciences Internship Credit Policy:
The College of Arts & Sciences follows the University Policy on Academic Internships with the following clarifications (as of April 2016):
A maximum of 12 hours of internship credit may be counted toward the B.A. or B.S. degree. Individual departments determine whether internships count toward the major and minor. Students are expected to either enroll in an internship course or work independently with a faculty member to design a readings and research project that complements the internship activity. Internship work must be done during the same semester in which the student is enrolled for internship credit.
