Burlington--For knowing answers to questions on feeds and feeding, herd health, milk quality and dairy foods, the Vermont 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team cruised into a fourth-place finish at the North American 4-H Invitational Dairy Quiz Bowl.

The Nov. 3-4 competition was held at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Fifteen teams from throughout the country competed in the double-elimination quiz bowl contest, which also included a 50-question written exam.

Representing Vermont were Aislynn Farr, Richmond; Elizabeth Menard, Fairfield; Hillary Mitchell, Morrisville; and Kennedy Moore, Reading. They each earned a spot on the team for having the highest individual scores in the senior division at the University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl, held last March. Accompanying the 4-H'ers were coaches Sara Kirby, East Montpelier, and Judy Vaughan, Newbury.

The Vermont team competed against Pennsylvania, Iowa, Alabama and Georgia, slipping into fourth place after losing a tie-breaker against Maryland. Each team member was awarded an engraved silver cup, commemorative glass and a rosette ribbon. Elizabeth Menard also was recognized for having the ninth highest individual score on the written test.

The competition, designed to test the competitors' knowledge of the dairy industry, covers a wide spectrum of topics although each year also focuses on a few areas of special interest. For the 2017 contest, selected topics were farm safety, robotic milking and use of automated calf feeders.

The two-day event included a get-acquainted pizza party and an awards banquet. In addition, the Vermont 4-H'ers toured Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby.

Partial funding for the trip was provided by the State 4-H Dairy Committee. Each team member also received a K. Stewart Gibson Award, given in honor of the former UVM Extension dairy specialist, to help cover expenses.
