Statement on Professionalism
Our Larner College of Medicine community upholds the highest standards of professionalism as we follow our passion for lifelong learning and improvement. We demonstrate professionalism through integrity, accountability, compassion, altruism, and social responsibility. We honor the trust our society has placed in us as stewards of the art and science of medicine, relying on cultural humility, kindness, and respect to guide our daily interactions. We expect all members of our community to embrace these principles of professionalism as we strive to conduct and support patient care, research, and education that are second to none.
Our Dean on Medical Professionalism
Dean Page's Message on Professionalism:
Every member of the Larner College of Medicine community should feel that they are in an environment where they are respected, and around others who are committed to treating each other—their colleagues and collaborators, their patients, their students, their classmates, people who work for them, and the people they work for—in a professional manner.
Professionalism must be a core value of educators, scientists, caregivers, and all those who work in medicine and science. Because of medicine’s great importance in people’s lives—often literally sustaining them—that power has to be handled responsibly, and with humility. This is what we have to expect of ourselves, and what we expect of each other. Our Statement on Professionalism was developed by a diverse Task Force and embraced by our community with a celebration and roll out on May 1, 2019. From that time onward, every offer letter for employment and every letter of acceptance has included our Statement on Professionalism; this states what we expect of each other, and what we aspire to provide for everyone who joins the Larner Community. We recommit to professionalism every day, and each year in May we celebrate this commitment with the Dean’s Awards for Professionalism.
Our initial celebration in 2019 was just the beginning of a renewed focus on and commitment to our values, to our missions, and to each other. I am grateful for every individual at the Larner College of Medicine who supports our efforts in education, research, and service, and contributes to our culture of professionalism. This core value continues to serve as the foundation for all of our accomplishments.
