Cancer Burden in Persistent Poverty Areas across the Cancer Continuum: A Scoping Review to Identify Gaps and Opportunities for Future Research

Dr. Emily Hallgren led a scoping review examining how persistent poverty—long-term, place-based poverty—affects cancer outcomes across the care continuum. The review found that living in persistent poverty areas is overwhelmingly associated with worse outcomes, highlighting urgent needs for interventions to reduce disparities.

Community case study of patient and clinician early engagement in research on multiple chronic conditions using an implementation guide

Body

Dr. Constance van Eeghen, program lead for Implementation Science, published on a virtual collaboration that brought together patients, caregivers, clinicians, and researchers to co-create a research agenda for managing multiple chronic conditions. The project achieved high engagement and produced practical tools, including a Partnering Guide for Research and prioritized themes to advance patient-centered health research.

Rural-urban disparities in the prevalence of chronic pain in adults: Associations with demographic and socioeconomic characteristics

Dr. Erika Ziller, HSRC director, led a study examining rural-urban differences in chronic pain among U.S. adults. Using national survey data, the research found that rural residents experience higher rates of chronic pain than urban residents, even after adjusting for demographic and socioeconomic factors, highlighting the need for innovative care delivery and payment models to improve access to pain management in rural communities.
