Owing to disk hardware failure, we will need to bring the Gemini cluster offline Thursday evening, October 10, 2002. Downtime will begin at 6:00 pm with services to be restored by regular work hours on Friday (~6:30 am). All file and print services on the Gemini servers will be unavailable at this time. Also, Banner access via the traditional client will be out of service. Citrix-based access and web reporting will be unaffected at that time. We regret the short notice, but this maintenance is necessary to prevent catastrophic data loss and unscheduled downtime. Why is this happening, you ask? Call it fate, call it an act of God, or blame it all on Dell Equipment corporation... wherever the blame lies, the fact of the matter is that our primary disk array has experienced a type of error that is, according to its own specs, impossible. We need to rebuild the array from scratch and restore all data from tape. We hope to avoid future problems of this type by migrating to a more robust and reliable storage system in the very near future. We apologize for any inconvenience, and ask that you bear with us until we have replaced this faulty hardware. -Greg MacKinnon
