Working in conjunction with distributed IT staff, ETS has decided not to renew support for ESET NOD32 anti-virus software this coming November.  This decision is based on a significant increase in the cost of ESET software, combined with a perceived decrease in its value.

Starting immediately, ETS has licensed Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 (FEP) for use on University-owned computers through Microsoft Campus Agreement.  For student-owned computers and faculty/staff home computers, we are recommending the use of the free Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) product.

The Forefront installer is available in the following location:
https://www.uvm.edu/software
A link to download MS Security Essentials also can be found at this site.

Be sure to uninstall ESET NOD32 before installing Forefront. It is advised that you uninstall NOD32 by going to the Start/Windows menu, then selecting "All Programs", "ESET", "Uninstall".  Owing to a bug in NOD32, use of the "Add/Remove Software" or "Uninstall a Program" Control Panel is not recommended.

More information about Security Essentials, Forefront and uninstalling ESET NOD32 available at the IT antivirus web page.

ESET NOD32 will cease to function at the end of November 2011, so it is vital that we transition all systems before that time.  To speed this transition, we plan to automate deployment of Forefront to Active Directory-joined Windows systems starting later this summer.  ETS is seeking early adopters to assist in testing of automated deployment.  If you are interested in participating in the tests, please contact Greg Mackinnon.
