Access to America Online, and use of the AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)
service, have been restored for UVM network users. (If you experience
trouble using AIM, you may need to make a change to your setup;
please see instructions below.)
The load on UVM's Internet connection has increased dramatically this
fall. A number of measures, including restricting some types of
traffic, have been necessary in order to preserve everyone's ability
to make effective use of Internet-based services. Additional network
capacity has been scheduled for December, and emergency capacity is
planned to be installed as soon as next week. Nonetheless, UVM's
Internet link is shared by roughly 7,000 people, and we will probably
always have to be mindful of our individual impact this limited and
expensive resource. For additional information, please see:

Computing and Information Technology did not intend to cut off
communications with colleagues, family, and friends, and regrets the
inconvenience users of AOL and AIM experienced during the hours those
services were unavailable.
If you have trouble using AOL Instant Messenger:
If AIM is unable to sign you on, follow these steps (there may be
some variation between different versions of AIM):
1. Start AIM, and from the sign-on window, click "Setup". You'll
see a Preferences dialog.
2. Click on the Connection category or tab.
3. If you see a button, click it;
the Port setting should change to 5190.
Otherwise, next to "Host port," fill in 5190
4. Click and sign on as usual.
