The Humanities Center Summer Undergraduate Resarch Fellows (SURF) program supports undergraduate scholarship and creative projects during the summer months. Administered through the Office of Undergraduate Research, the Humanities Center will provide two awards, one for a humanities-related project and one for an arts-related project. Each fellowship carries a $5,000 award ($3,500 stipend and $1,500 project-related expenses). In addition, the faculty supervisor of each awardee will receive $500 in professional development funds in recognition of their expected supervision of the project over the summer months. The two award categories are:

  • Humanities: For projects in fields including and/or encompassing Literature, Classics, Religion, Philosophy, History, Art History, Film and Television Studies, and Cultural Studies.
  • Creative Arts: For projects including and/or encompassing Music, Theater, Film Production, and Studio Art.

Proposals will be judged on these criteria

  • Intellectual and/or artistic substance
  • Promise of results
  • Preparation of applicant
  • Feasibility

Note: As a condition of the award, all Summer Undergraduate Resarch Fellows will be expected to present their project at the Student Research Conference in April. Presentations may take the form of a research poster or a scheduled presentation.
