The Custodial Department provides the University with high quality cleaning services in a cost effective, environmentally-friendly and efficient manner. Our best practice prioritizes health, safety, and customer satisfaction.

Routine Services

Routine Services focus on general facilities upkeep and on maintaining the hygiene, cleanliness and physical appearance of campus facilities in response to typical daily usage and on-going operations within those facilities.

Office Areas

Custodial Services cleans all offices and departmentally-managed conference rooms one time per week on a rotating schedule.

  • Custodial Services does not provide deskside trash containers nor plastic trash bag liners for individual offices. Departments are responsible for purchasing their own trash containers for individual offices.
  • Custodial Services does not empty individual deskside trash and recycling bins. Office occupants are responsible for emptying their own trash and recycling into a centralized collection area in the hallway.
  • UVM Recycling & Zero Waste does supply deskside recycling bins for individual offices. Email recycle@uvm.edu to request a bin.

Custodial staff assigned to lab areas are able to verbally communicate in English and have received additional training in laboratory safety. They are mindful of protecting personnel safety as well as the safety of research materials and equipment from inadvertent contamination, movement or other disruption. Each research lab receives routine cleaning once per week within a designated time frame/day.

  • Laboratory research staff are responsible for removing their own trash and recycling from their research labs and taking all items to a hallway centralized collection area within the building.
  • Project work such as floor stripping and waxing or overhead dusting will be scheduled in advance with laboratory staff to ensure minimal interruption of research work and to avoid contamination or disruption of research samples or equipment with foreign materials or cleaning agents.
  • Custodians will not touch chairs, work benches, equipment, supplies, computers, personal items, or any lab research items.
