Student Outreach Combats Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
Bonnie Purtill ’18 attended Colchester High School’s health fair to share information about noise exposure, hearing loss, and treatment of tinnitus using a noise exposure manniken nicknamed “Jolene.” The manniken, built by emerita faculty member Dinah Smith using donor funding, allows users to identify unsafe noise levels while using earbuds. Third-year Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences student Michael Mandarino attended the event with Purtill.

Claudia Abbiati, M.S., CCC-SLP, clinical educator. Ms. Abbiati is a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) who supervises and educates graduate student clinicians at the Eleanor M. Luse Center for Communication. She teaches specific skills, clarifies concepts, assists with critical thinking, and provides mentorship. As a clinical educator, she integrates theoretical, evidence-based knowledge with clinical practice. Claudia is a generalist in practice with experience serving toddler through older adult individuals in a variety of practice areas.
Emily L. Coderre, Ph.D. Dr. Coderre studies the cognitive neuroscience of language using neuroimaging techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Her research examines the cognitive processes underlying language in both typically-developing populations and in special population such as bilinguals and individuals with autism. She is particularly interested in how we understand the meaning of language during word, sentence, and narrative comprehension, and in how such understanding is impaired in autism. Her work aims to better understand the mechanisms of language deficits in autism in order to design more effective treatment interventions.
Corey Gibeault, Au.D. Dr. Gibeault is a Vermont licensed audiologist, who holds an American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) certificate of clinical competence. She is a member of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), as well as the Vermont Speech, Language, & Hearing Association (VSHA). She has previously finished her coursework for her doctorate and moved back to her home state of Vermont. She currently provides direct patient care at the Eleanor M. Luse Center for Communication, the university's on-campus non-profit speech, language and hearing clinic. Her clinical specialties include diagnostic and rehabilitative audiological services, including hearing aid fittings utilizing evidence-based practice, with a special interest in the adult and geriatric population.

Celebrating 75 Years of UVM Nursing
In June 1947, the first students to earn a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Vermont crossed the lawn in front of the Waterman Building to accept their diplomas. Of the 267 students graduating that day, only two were in the new five-year nursing program. To celebrate our milestone 75-year anniversary, we're featuring alumni who've made an impact with a year-long UVM Nursing Through the Decades series. Read more >>
