The Department deeply appreciates the generosity of our alumni, friends, and emeriti, who established a number of endowment funds and current-use funds in the department. These funds have made it possible for us to offer scholarships, award prizes, and conference travel support to our undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to talented high school students across the State of Vermont. These endowed and current-use funds include:

Current Donor-Endowed Funds

Dan Archdeacon Memorial Fund
Body

This current-use fund was established in 2015 by family members and friends of the late Professor of Mathematics Dan Archdeacon, who passed away in 2015 after 33 years of distinguished teaching, research, and service at the University of Vermont. This fund supports undergraduate and graduate student research and travel to professional conferences.

Evan and Krysta Dummit Fund for the UVM High School Mathematics Contest

This endowment fund was established in 2007 by former Professor of Mathematics David Dummit, who retired in 2015 after 31 years of distinguished teaching, research, and service at the University of Vermont. This fund provides annual financial support and award prizes for UVM High School Mathematics Contest, an outreach event administered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in which high school students compete in the areas of number theory, algebra and geometry, and are recognized as statewide and regional winners, best in school awards, and certificates of merit. The competition has been held annually since 1958.

Kenneth I. and Mary Lou Gross Family Scholarship Fund

This endowment fund was established in 2008 by the late Professor of Mathematics Kenneth Gross in memory of Marc E. Hull, former Vermont Commissioner of Education, in recognition of his significant accomplishments and their impact on education in Vermont. Ken Gross, who retired in 2016 after 29 years of distinguished teaching, research, and service at the University of Vermont, and Marc Hull were deeply committed to their students and to the importance of mathematics and the sciences. This fund provides annual scholarship support to Vermont undergraduate students majoring in mathematics who demonstrate financial need.

Larry and Jane Haugh Endowment Fund

This endowment fund was established in 2009 by former Professor and Director of Statistics Larry Haugh, who retired in 2006 after 31 years of distinguished teaching, research, and service at the University of Vermont, and his wife Jane Haugh. This fund provides scholarships, awards, internships, research and other general support for special endeavors of undergraduate and graduate students in statistics.

John Kenney Endowment Fund
Body

This endowment fund was established in 1967 by alumni John Kenney (class of 1920). It provides an annual prize to one or more graduate students for excellence in mathematics as determined by the Department.

Mathematics and Statistics Nam Sang Kil Endowment Fund
Body

This endowment fund was established in 1998 in honor of Chairman Nam Sang Kil for the purpose of supporting the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in recognition of the value of education as a path toward the betterment of mankind. At the discretion of the department chair, the fund currently provides scholarships and awards prizes to students in mathematics and statistics.

Christina McCall Memorial Scholarship

This endowment fund was established in 2007 by the family and friends of Christina McCall, who passed away in 2007. This fund provides annual scholarship assistance to one or more undergraduate students, based on financial need, studying mathematics in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, with preference given to women.
