BIO
Dr. Kathryn (Katy) Hinkelman is an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Vermont. Her research explores how built infrastructure can work in harmony with environmental systems to support more sustainable, resilient, and equitable communities. Combining energy system modeling, life cycle assessment, and biomimetic design, she develops computational methods and open-source software that translate this vision into practical solutions. Her work contributes to widely used open-source platforms, including the Modelica Buildings Library, IBPSA Modelica Library, and URBANopt, and has been supported by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, and NASA. Prior to joining UVM, she earned a Ph.D. in Architectural Engineering from Penn State, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, and worked as a consulting engineer designing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for buildings. In both research and teaching, she is passionate about bridging fundamental science and community-based practice, engaging students in projects that address pressing challenges in infrastructure, energy, and environmental sustainability.
