Sarah Carleton ~ Director

Sarah holds an MFA in Acting from Catholic University and has taught at Kean College, Seton Hall University, Adam Mickewicz in Poznan, Poland, and for the last twenty-four years at UVM. Directorial works at UVM include Tartuffe, Peter and the Starcatcher, Dracula, Our Town, The Arabian Nights, You Can’t Take it With You, Compleat Female Stage Beauty, and Noises Off. Professional directing credits include The Mousetrap, Wait Until Dark, Or, Almost Maine, and She Stoops to Conquer. Sarah is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association with acting credits in New York, regional and national tours which include You Can’t Take it With you, Broadway Bound, Much Ado About Nothing, Over the Pub, and The Taming of the Shrew directed by Maurice Daniels of the Royal Shakespeare Company. At Saint Michael’s Playhouse Sarah is a member of the creative team serving as director, acting company member and artistic associate. She is a certified Meisner teacher, certified actor combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors, a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher and a member of The Association of Theatre Movement Educators. In 2010 Sarah received a Meritorious Achievement Award in Directing from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for “Outstanding and Strong Directorial Work” for the UVM Department of Theatre production of You Can’t Take it With You.

Martin A. Thaler ~ Costume Coordinator

M.F.A PSU 1984, UNITED SCENIC ARTISTS LOCAL 829. Awarded the University of Vermont’s Kroepsch-Maurice Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2007. PROFESSIONAL: NYC: Off-Broadway, The Servant of Two Masters for Tony Award winning director, Stuart Vaughn, New Globe Theatre, Henson Associates, The Muppets, Izquierdo Studios; REGIONAL: Vermont Stage Company, Champlain Shakespeare Festival, Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, Theater-by-the-Sea, Circus Smirkus, Tri-Cities Opera, Stage One: The Louisville Children’s Theatre, West Virginia Public Stage, Playhouse on the Park, Hartford, CT, Maryland Pubic TV; ACADEMIC: Brandeis University, Dartmouth College, Rowan University, SUNY Fredonia. Over 150 productions at UVM. Certified in design and application of prosthetic make up for film and theatre, Cinema Make Up School, Los Angeles, CA. Professor Thaler is most proud of his work in the classroom, placing many of UVM design students in graduate schools on full scholarships. During the summer he teaches drawing and painting to senior adults at the Rehoboth Art League, Rehoboth, DE.

John B. Forbes ~ Lighting Designer

John received his B.A. in Dramatic Art from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his M.F.A. in Lighting Design from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has designed lighting for the Old Globe Theatre, the San Diego Repertory Theatre, the Center Repertory Company of Walnut Creek, California, the Ensemble Theatre Company of Santa Barbara, California, Company One in Boston, Theatre Aspen in Colorado, St. Lukes Theatre and Riverside Shakespeare Company in New York and the Arizona Theatre Company. Locally, he has designed lighting for the Vermont Stage Company, Saint Michael’s Playhouse, Agnes Table and Lost Nation Theatre, among others. He has taught at San Diego State University and the University of San Diego. At USD, he also managed Shiley Theatre, home to the 1996 Presidential Debate, where he served as technical liaison between the University and the Presidential Debate Commission. He is a member of United Scenic Artists – Local 829, the United States Institute for Theatre Technology and is Past President of United Academics, the faculty union at UVM.  He has designed Dracula, How I Learned to Drive, The Good Woman of Setzuan, A Doll’s House, Cabaret, Compleat Female Stage Beauty, Urinetown and Spring Awakening among others at UVM.

Sara Nelson ~ Scenic Designer

Sara Nelson is a Vermont based scenic designer and artist and a full-time lecturer here at UVM.
Previously, she taught stagecraft and design and Northern Vermont University – Johnson and was the Design/Technology supervisor and scenic painting instructor at Adelphi University. In addition to those roles, much of her work was focused on mentoring students through the design and production process. Sara is a member of USITT and has also presented work on collaboration and the creative process for the Association of Theatre in Higher Education. Her current design work has focused on new works and devised theatre, including collaborations with Rising Circle Theatre Collective and the F*It Club, for whom she is resident designer. Abra Clawson ~ Sound Designer

First: a huge thank you to UVM Theater and Dance for continuing to create during this pandemic. After graduating from UVM in 2019 (Religion and Anthropology), Abra became Baltimore Center Stage's 2019-2020 Audio Apprentice. While there, she designed theYoung Playwright's Festival and worked on Thoughts of a Colored Man, and Richard & Jane & Dick & Sally, and Men on Boats. With the arrival of COVID she returned to Vermont when jobs with the Santa Fe Opera and Trinity Repertory Company were postponed. She has since worked on podcasts including the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' A Glowy Snowy Day (audio engineer) and the Vermont Folklife Center's VT Untapped (associate producer), as well as collaborated on sound art for the upcoming album Tomorrow Was Never A Promise. Previous UVM credits include: Tartuffe (sound design), Hand to God (asst. sound design), and work on five other main stage productions.  abraclawson.com.

Riley Mulroy ~ Production Stage Manager

Riley Mulroy is a junior theatre major and an art and parks recreation, and tourism double minor at UVM. This is the third show Riley has stage managed on the RTT stage, past works including Jesus Christ Superstar and A Symphony of Rats. Riley has a strong background in theatre culminating in his work with the Walpole Children’s Theatre. Riley has transitioned from onstage work to the backstage world, all with the help of his professors/mentors Sara Nelson and John Forbes. He would like to thank everyone involved in the production for all of their hard work on our journey together.

Julia Moriarty ~ Assistant Stage Manager

Julia Moriarty is a transfer student in her second year at the University of Vermont. This production marks her second with the UVM Department of Theatre and Dance, the first being Shakespeare in Love last spring. She is grateful for the opportunity to work backstage to put on a show once more, and for the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.

Isabel Martine ~ Assistant Stage Manager

Isabel Martine is a sophomore theatre major and studio art minor. She is thrilled to be working on her third production at UVM! In previous seasons with UVM, she has been an Assistant Stage Manager for The Normal Heart and Stage Manager for Moving Through the Flood. Past roles include Isee in the short film ThingsAre Afoot (The Angry Otter Project) and ensemble in Mamma Mia! (RiverStage Community Theatre). She would like to thank the stage management team, Sarah, and the cast and crew for making this show happen!
