Walking: performance ruminations in ambulatory process
an original UVM Theatre & Dance performance event created and directed by Theatre & Dance faculty Julian Barnett and Paul Besaw. The event explores ideas and experiences of “walking” – physically, intellectually, relationally, and more – and consists of three parts:
- outdoor movement performance: an original site performance for the Royall Tyler Theatre patio, directed by Barnett. Features original/live music.
- installation performance: two installations for the Royall Tyler Theatre lobbies, directed by Barnett and Besaw.
- theatre performance: a poetic adaptation of Thomas Bernhard’s Walking. Directed by Besaw, this new theatre work features an adaption of Bernhard’s novella by Kathleen Gough and Paul Besaw, original/live music by Tom Cleary, and original film/projection design by Myles Jewell.

Straight White Men
By Young Jean Lee
Directed by Zeina Salame
Performances November 30 thru December 3 at 7:30PM & December 4 at 2:00PM.
Royall Tyler Theatre
When Ed and his three adult sons come together to celebrate Christmas, they enjoy cheerful trash-talking, pranks, and takeout Chinese. Then they confront a problem that even being a happy family can’t solve: When identity matters, and privilege is problematic, what is the value of being a straight white man?
“The signal surprise of Straight White Men, written by the ever-audacious Young Jean Lee, is that the play is not a full-frontal assault on the beings of the title…Ms. Lee’s fascinating play goes far beyond cheap satire, ultimately becoming a compassionate and stimulating exploration of one man’s existential crisis. Believe it or not, Ms. Lee wants us to sympathize with the inexpressible anguish of her protagonist, a middle-aged, upper-middle-class straight white man…[A] mournful and inquisitive play…” —NY Times.

Music & Lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe
Directed by Leila Teitelman
Performances March 29 thru April 1 at 7:30PM & April 2 at 2:00PM
Royall Tyler Theatre
Based on a story in The Weekly World News, Bat Boy: The Musical is a musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. For lack of a better solution, the local sheriff brings Bat Boy to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker, where he is eventually accepted as a member of the family and taught to act like a “normal” boy by the veterinarian’s wife, Meredith, and teenage daughter, Shelley. Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but when he naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls, they turn on him, prodded by the machinations of Dr. Parker, who secretly despises Bat Boy. Shelley and Bat Boy, who have fallen in love, run away together from the ignorant townfolk and have a blissful coupling in the woods, but their happiness is shattered when Meredith arrives and reveals a secret. Soon the entire town arrives and hears the shocking story of Bat Boy’s unholy origin.

FROM ROUTE 7 SOUTH: Take Route 7 (Shelburne Road) to Pearl Street in Burlington and turn right. Follow Pearl Street east away from Lake Champlain. At the Ira Allen Chapel (University Place), turn right. The UVM Theatre is at the end of the street on your left just behind the Campus Transit turnaround.

Parking

The best place to park during evening and weekend performances is in the Allen House Lot on the corner of Main and Prospect Street. Turn in as if going to Admissions and take a quick left into the lot. We do not recommend parking directly in front of the theatre where it says "No parking anytime" as the City of Burlington will ticket and tow. Handicap Parking is still available next to Morrill.
