Hyon Joo Yoo

Associate Professor

Alma mater(s)
  • Ph.D. Syracuse University, 2007

BIO

Professor Yoo’s research stems from her belief that it is only by questioning the way we exist in the world that we may create a life worth living for ourselves our society. Engaging in this remaking of the human condition is, in Professor Yoo’s worldview, an exciting theoretical and creative process for teacher and student alike. Her research in psychanalysis is a means to formulate the essential questions regarding human subjects and the condition of their existence. This research informs her writing on film. She examines how film, as a medium of expression, articulates questions regarding humanity in global contexts. This theoretical research, in exploring the historical, social, and cultural contexts involved in global cinema, expands the overall scope of film analysis. She is noted for her expertise on Lacanian psychanalysis, as well as South Korean cinema. In her teaching she seeks to inspire students to see themselves as participating in world history as creators and thinkers.
