Events The English Department hosts exciting speakers, workshops, and receptions with special guests throughout the school year, some open to the public and some for our majors only. Department Events Annual Events From a poetry-themed pizza party to Honors Day and our Student Symposium, English and FTS students and faculty gather as a community at our annual events. Special Guests Some guests, like Ada Limón or Alison Bechdel, give public talks drawing hundreds of audience members; others allow our majors rare access to scholars and filmmakers who visit a single class to speak informally about their work. Bicentennial The UVM English Department, founded in 1827, is preparing to celebrate its 200th birthday as the first Department of English Literature in the U.S. This stereograph shows a group on the west lawn in front of Old Mill before its renovation in the 1880s.
