Alexandria “Lex” Alveshere was recently awarded the Thomas Sullivan Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year Award by the Graduate Student Senate in recognition of her work teaching several labs for chemistry and biochemistry majors during the 2020-2021 academic year. While this year was a particularly difficult one due to the global pandemic, students were always met by Alexandria’s exuberant enthusiasm for chemistry upon entering the lab, and a sticker when leaving the lab. This enthusiasm, along with an empathetic attitude towards the unique struggles of her students due to the pandemic, caused nearly twenty students to submit nominations to the awards committee, all with overwhelmingly positive things to say about Alexandria’s work as their TA. In her acceptance speech for the award, Alexandria thanked her students for their patience during a challenging year and advocated for the attitude of compassion and grace that many cultivated towards their students during the pandemic to continue as the university forward.
