All business students must declare a business theme and concentration. Students typically declare their theme and concentration by the end of sophomore year.

Catamount Core
UVM’s general education curriculum, called the Catamount Core, is designed to expose you to a wide breadth of coursework, including topics beyond business. Most students take 1 Catamount Core course per semester.
Degree Audit
You can review your degree requirements, including your business core courses and Catamount Core requirements, on your degree audit. You can access your degree audit by logging into myUVM and navigating to the Degree Audit card. Your degree audit will be available to view later this summer, so stay tuned!
What to expect from your advising appointment
Steps to complete before your appointment
Review your existing course schedule and the UVM schedule of courses for additional course options
You will have the chance to change your fall schedule which you were already registered for if needed.
If you would like to add another course to your schedule, browse the UVM schedule of courses for options. Make sure you are searching under the Fall 2026 term.
Take Math Placement Assessment and, if applicable, the Foreign Language Placement Test
The Math Placement Assessment is required for GSB students and will determine which math course you would be the most successful in. The MPA is untimed but takes most students about 60-90 minutes to complete. It is important that you finish the MPA at least 24 hours before your course registration appointment, and that you complete the assessment honestly and accurately.
The Foreign Language Placement Test is optional for GSB students and should be taken if you want to take French or Spanish at UVM. While GSB does not have a foreign language requirement, you are able to take it if you want to continue or begin studying a foreign language for personal interest or to pursue a minor.
Send any college credits from AP exams and dual enrollment courses to UVM
If you took any AP exams in high school and earned credit for those exams, you will need to request that the College Board send your score report to UVM. You can do this on your College Board account. Review UVM’s AP credit comparability guide to confirm whether your scores will be granted credit at UVM.
If you took any college-level courses through dual enrollment in high school, you will need to request that your transcript from that college or university is sent to UVM.
Install and log in to Microsoft Teams and Outlook
You will use Microsoft Teams to join your virtual advising appointment. Make sure you allow Teams to access your camera and microphone and grant permission to screen share before you join your advising appointment.
Now is the time to build the habit of checking your UVM Outlook email regularly, as all UVM-related communications you receive going forward will be sent to your UVM Outlook.

Who is my academic advisor?
Academic advisor assignments will be finalized by early August. Your advisor's name will be listed at the top of your Degree Audit page which you can access on myUVM under the Degree Audit card on the homepage. Until you are assigned an advisor, please reach out to gsbcss@uvm.edu if you have questions or concerns.
How do I know what textbooks and required materials I need for my fall classes?
You do not need to purchase required course materials yet. It is best to wait until you arrive to campus before buying any course materials, in case you change your schedule or the instructor changes the required materials during the summer.
My course registration appointment occurs before the College Board posts my AP scores. What if I’m registered for a fall class that I received AP credit for?
The College Board posts AP exam scores in early to mid-July. You will have an opportunity to make changes to your schedule throughout the summer. We are happy to meet with you again or discuss over email how to make schedule changes if needed.
What kind of laptop should I bring to college?
GSB faculty strongly prefer that students use a Windows-based laptop rather than a Mac due to compatibility issues with certain applications that are used in business courses. For minimum and recommended hardware specs, see the UVM Student Computing resources. Students using Mac may need to use UVM virtual computing lab resources for workaround solutions for some software applications.
What else should I bring to college?
Consider bringing some business casual attire (business casual typically includes button down shirts, blouses, slacks, skirts, blazers, etc.). We recommend wearing business casual attire at certain GSB events such as career fairs. GSB students organize a professional clothing sale every semester, so you will have an opportunity to buy second-hand, discounted professional clothing there as well.
