Move over "Snuggie!" Ten Business students are hoping they have what it takes to invent the next pop culture phenomenon. "Basically what we're going to do is take a product from start to finish," said John Bleh, a junior Business Administration major concentrating in Management and the Environment and Human Resources. Bleh is one of ten students enrolled in the Integrated Product Development Class (BSAD 293) offered by the School of Business Administration. The invitation-only class teaches students how to simulate, as closely as possible, an industrial product development environment where engineers, designers and business administrators work together in teams to bring an idea from concept to prototype. "It's a selective process," said Jerry Manock, one of the three instructors of the IPD class. "Students submit employment applications; we typically get 20-25 applications for anywhere between 6-12 (students) in the class. We try to pick the students based on their backgrounds, their specializations ... we get a well rounded highly skilled team working on a project." This semester, students are working with Hampton Direct, a leading importer and distributer of consumer products, selling to major national retailers, mail order catalogs, home shopping channels and direct response television. The company, based in Williston, Vermont, distributes many "As Seen on TV" products such as the Twin Draft Guard and the Wonder Hanger, two household products that have become popular through infomercials.
