Description of a First-Line Supervisor

First-line supervisors are responsible to ensure that people are working to capacity and that each individual has a reasonable workload. They typically teach workers new jobs and may occasionally fill in for workers who are absent. Taking care of the day-to-day problems as they arise, they serve as key communicators between management and those being supervised. First-line supervisors are expected to understand the big picture and bring together the details of operation in such a way that the organization's vision is realized. They schedule the tasks that need to be done, assign individuals to do them, and see to it that the work is done both properly and promptly.
