Tractor Safety Course for Teens Planned for Derby in Spring

Derby--By law, all 14- and 15-year-olds who are employed on a farm other than their family's farm must successfully complete a tractor safety certification course. Older teens who work in agriculture also are encouraged to sign up for this training.

University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H and the Agriculture and Natural Resources program of North Country Technical Career Center (NCTCC) have teamed up to offer a certification course this spring. The four-session course will be held at NCTCC, located at 633 Quarry Rd., Derby, and taught by NCTCC instructor Fern Fontaine.

The course will start during school vacation week with classes from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on April 25, 27 and May 4, 11. The final class schedule may be adjusted according to participants' needs.

Students will receive hands-on instruction for operating tractors over 20 horsepower along with other farm equipment. They also will learn about general agricultural safety, including potential hazards on the farm and how to deal with these hazards. To obtain their National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program certificate, participants must attend all four sessions and pass a 50-question written knowledge exam as well as a skills and driving test.

The all-inclusive course fee is $60, which covers all sessions, lunches, materials and the testing fee. Scholarships are available. Teens from neighboring counties and states are welcome to participate in the course.

Registrations will be accepted until April 8 or the course is full.
Early registration is advised as the course is expected to fill up quickly.
