Registration Open for Military Teen Leadership Camp

Eden--Calling all military teens. Registration is now open for the Operation: Military Kids (OMK) Teen Leadership Camp, Aug. 4-9 in Eden.

If you are 13 to 17 years old and have an immediate family member in the military, you're invited to sign up for a week of fun, sleeping in tents and taking part in leadership and teambuilding exercises, outdoor adventures and traditional camp activities including canoeing, crafts and evening campfires. The overnight camp will be held at the Mt. Norris Scout Reservation on Lake Eden.

The camp, which is offered at no cost to campers, is sponsored by the Green Mountain Boy Scout Council and OMK, a program of University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H. Space is limited to 32 campers, on a first-come, first-served basis, so early registration is advised.

The camp brochure and registration form can be downloaded at www.uvm.edu/extension/youth/pdfs/omk/omk_teen_leadership_registration2013.pdf. Additional information, including a checklist for camp and medical and insurance forms to complete, will be sent prior to the start of the session.

At camp teens will acquire skills, such as goal setting, decision-making, conflict resolution and effective communications that will help them better handle additional responsibilities at home during deployment or other times of separation from their service member. They also will gain the confidence and skills needed to take on leadership roles in their school, community and state as well as learn how to work effectively as part of a team.

To learn more, contact Camp Director George Beach at (802) 878-4029 or UVM Extension 4-H Director Sarah Kleinman at (802) 656-0311. To request a disability-related accommodation to participate, please contact OMK Coordinator Stephanie Atwood at (802) 656-0346 or stephanie.atwood@uvm.edu by July 15.

Funding for the camp comes from an OSD/OMK grant through a partnership of the Department of Defense, U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense, Military Community and Family Policy, Office of Family Policy/Children and Youth and 4-H National Headquarters/National Institute of Food and Agriculture/U. S. Department of Agriculture under a Kansas State University special project.
