Windsor County 4-H Hosts State 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl

Springfield--The annual State 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl, a competition designed to test 4-H members' knowledge of horses, will be held March 9 in Springfield.

University of Vermont (UVM) Extension and Windsor County 4-H will host the event, which gets underway at 10 a.m. at the Howard Dean Educational Center, 307 South St. Admission is free.

Contestants will buzz in with answers to questions on animal nutrition, breeds, colors, reproduction, anatomy, conformation, equine history and horse showmanship, among other topics. They also will be asked questions on 4-H in general.

Rosette ribbons will be awarded to the top 10 individuals in each age group. All competitors will receive a blue, red or white participation ribbon, depending on their scores.

For seniors (14 to 18 years old) the quiz bowl also serves as the qualifying event for selection of the state horse quiz bowl team, which will represent Vermont in national competition. The 16 seniors with the highest individual scores in regular competition will compete in a semi-final round of 50 questions. The eight highest scorers from this round will participate in a final round of another 50 questions.

The top four will earn a spot on the Vermont team, which will compete at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Round-up in Louisville, Ky., in November.

Snow date for this event is March 10 at the same location. For information about the 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl and other 4-H horse events, contact Wendy Sorrell, UVM Extension 4-H livestock educator, at (802)656-5418 or by e-mail at
