WID's varied programming supports instructors who are exploring ways to teach writing within the context of disciplinary goals.

The Writing in the Disciplines Program mission is to support instructors who help make writing a significant and meaningful part of each students’ undergraduate experience. WID offers variety, breadth, and depth of programming, some open to all instructors and others tailored to departments, always aiming to reduce barriers to participation. Our programming introduces and reinforces principles about teaching and learning, creates connections among colleagues, connects instructors to resources, explores best practices in nurturing disciplinary writing, supports faculty writing, and addresses campus priorities.

Workshops

Join others to think about the ways writing works in your classroom. Workshop topics range from things like designing assignments and effective response to artificial intelligence and assessment.

Faculty Learning Groups

Dive deeply into a topic by participating in a multi-session instructor book or working group. These groups explore teaching & learning, assignment communication, grading alternatives, and more.

Faculty Writing

Make progress on personal writing projects during weekly drop-in writing retreats and committed writing groups. Attendees share their goals and progress, write quietly, and stay warm with coffee and tea.

Get Support for Your Courses

Catamount Core

Join other instructors to design and/or discuss teaching General Education courses with the Writing and Information Literacy (WIL1 or WIL2) designation. Opportunities include workshops, consultations, proposal development, and teaching resources.

WID Mentor Program

Get embedded writing assignment support in your course for both you and your students. WID matches student tutors from the Undergraduate Writing Center as writing mentors with faculty and their writing intensive course.

Annual Institute

Get a jump start on your course during this 2-day intensive institute that focuses on developing your course outline, assignment plan, and syllabi in relationship to your course goals. Attendees network with colleagues, make progress on their courses, and more.

Tailored Individual and Departmental Support

Individually or as a department, connect with WID's director or faculty associates to explore specific teaching challenges, revise teaching materials, draft outcomes, or work on curricular mapping. You can also request tailored workshops for your department.

WID Graduate Research Assistants offer instructors a chance to see how their assignment is understood by students.
