WID Mentor Program | Writing in the Disciplines | The University of Vermont(title)

The WID Mentor Program attaches Undergraduate Writing Center tutors to courses that involve discipline-based writing. Mentors are matched to courses based on their experience with the course's discipline. These mentors provide extra writing support to both the faculty and students.

Support for Faculty

Body

WID mentors are a resource for faculty who want to incorporate writing in their courses more effectively. They can provide insights into students’ experiences with writing assignments and activities, leading to more effective instructional practices.

Support for Students

Body

WID mentors provide additional writing support to students through individual conferences, facilitated peer review, and group or class workshops to help students become more proficient in writing and thinking in the discipline.

Depending on the plan, mentors may:

Body
  • Help plan writing assignments or activities
  • Provide feedback on assignments, rubrics, and other course materials
  • Give presentations or facilitate workshops related to writing or information literacy
  • Connect with subject area librarians to support information literacy work
  • Hold drop-in writing workshops shortly before assignments are due

How to Participate

Body

Faculty can submit WID Mentor requests for a possible match for the coming semester through the last day of the current semester. A limited number of placements are available dependent on schedules, mentor disciplines, and capacity. Interested instructors must submit a request for the program in order to be considered for a Mentor. Priority is given to instructors who demonstrate commitment to helping students improve as writers and who have participated in professional development around student writing. Please submit the form as soon as you are able, and we'll be in touch soon!
