Netbeans Setup

The following process is supplemental to the instructions provided by your course instructor. These instructions are intended as a supplement to the instructions provided by your professor.

Downloading NetBeans (with HTML and PHP)

These instructions should work if you are installing NetBeans on a Apple or Windows machine. Please make sure to select the relevant platform when downloading NetBeans.

  1. Visit https://netbeans.org/downloads/
  2. Choose to download the bundle under PHP marked by the red box.

    1. If you intend to use Netbeans for more than just PHP and HTML, the bundle under All.
  3. Open the Netbeans installation file, double clicking the executable or package file. Continue through the installer.
    1. You should not have to make any configuration options in this process, so simply install NetBeans as you would any other software.

Installing and Configuring Netbeans to Upload to your UVM Silk Space

  1. Open NetBeans.
  2. Click the New Project button, marked by a red box.
  3. Create a new PHP project by clicking PHP in the categories, and PHP Application in the projects.
  4. Configure the name and location of the PHP Project, then click Next.

    1. Project Name: CS008
    2. Sources Folder: the project is stored somewhere on your computer. You can change where it’s stored by clicking Browse, though the default option is fine for most people.
      1. Note: you should store this project in your Users folder. It’s bad practice to store this project elsewhere (root directory, among your applications, etc.). Don’t do it. 
  5. Configure the Run Configuration of the PHP Project, then click Finish.

    1. Change Run As to be Remote Web Site (FTP, SFTP)

      1. You must change this option before seeing any additional options below.
    2. Change the Project URL: to be the following: http://zbarden.w3.uvm.edu/cs008
      1. Instead of zbarden, enter in your NetID.
    3. Clear out the Upload Directory
    4. Ensure the Upload Files option is set to On Run
    5. To the right of Remote Connection, click Manage.
      1. You will see the following dialog box.

        1. Under Connection Name, enter UVM CS008
        2. Under Connection Type, choose SFTP
        3. Click OK
      2. Change the options in the Manage Remote Connections box as below.

        1. Host Name: w3.uvm.edu
        2. Port: 22
        3. User Name: Your NetID
          1. Instead of zbarden, you should be using your NetID
        4. Password: Leave Empty
        5. Private Key File: Leave Empty 
        6. Known Hosts File: Leave Default Value
        7. Initial Directory: /users/FirstLetterOfYourNetID/SecondLetterOfYourNetID/YOURNETID/www-root/CS008
          1. Instead of the /z/b/zbarden portion as shown in the picture, you should be using /firstLetterOfNetID/SecondLetterOfNetID/NetID
        8. Click Test Connection.
          1. Enter your password, then click OK
        9. You should get the “Connection Succeeded” message. If not, then it’s likely that a configuration error occurred. Please go back and double check your options.
