Water resource managers are in need of science-based tools to identify and prioritize river reaches for conservation and restoration to mitigate erosion and flooding hazards. Kristen Underwood and Lindsay Worley will provide an update on their research to develop a smart classifier of reach-based sediment erosion, transport and deposition that relies on existing stream geomorphic assessment data stored in the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources online database. They will preview visualization tools to communicate erosion hazards to communities, and will highlight how this research is supporting Vermont’s broader Functioning Floodplains Initiative.
The project Visualization Tools to Communicate Riverine Erosion Hazards and Improve Flood Resiliency in Headwater Communities of the Lake Champlain Basin is funded by the Lake Champlain Sea Grant, and leverages previous work of the investigators funded in part by the National Science Foundation under Vermont EPSCoR Grant Nos. EPS-1101317 and NSF OIA 1556770.
Participants should expect approximately 30 minutes of presentation followed by a facilitated, 20-minute Q&A period.
