Best Management Practices (BMPs)

BMPs and Lake Champlain

In relation to water pollution, Best Management Practices, or BMPs, are practices that work to reduce the amount of pollution flowing to a body of water. There are several BMPs that are currently at work to reduce the amount of pollutants that flow into Lake Champlain. Some examples of BMPs are:

  • Bioretention Systems/Rain Gardens (PDF)
  • Constructed Wetlands (PDF)
  • Trees
  • Rain Barrels (PDF)
  • Pervious Pavement for driveways, walkways, and parking lots (PDF)
  • Grass/vegetated swales (PDF)
  • Raise the Blade of your lawnmower to promote stormwater infiltration
  • Other BMPs inlude wetlands, riparian buffers, healthy soils, green roofs, and infiltration trenches/drywells

These practices keep nutrients on the land instead of letting them flow into streams, rivers and lakes. These can help prevent cyanobacteria blooms (sometimes called harmful algal blooms) and protect ecosystem health.
