Langevin brings unparalleled expertise and visionary leadership to the Osher Center, as it expands its role as a leader in the field of whole health. Earlier today, Langevin announced her retirement as Director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where she has overseen a $170 million annual portfolio that features whole-person research, positive health processes, and pain management.

Langevin's appointment at UVM marks a return to familiar ground—Langevin previously served as the Director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, jointly based at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and as a Professor of Neurological Sciences at the Robert Larner, MD College of Medicine, where she founded UVM’s Program in Integrative Health (PIH) in 2005.

Langevin will lead the development of a robust, transdisciplinary research agenda aligned with the missions of UVM’s Osher Center for Integrative Health, the Osher Collaborative—an international group of the 11 Osher Centers funded by The Bernard Osher Foundation—and the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health (ACIMH)—the world’s most comprehensive community for advancing the practice of whole health. Her appointment is expected to:

• Elevate UVM’s Osher Center’s national and international profile through high-impact research and thought leadership.
• Enhance competitiveness for research capacity across disciplines.
• Foster local, regional, national, and global partnerships to integrate research into clinical practice and policy.

UVM’s Interim Provost, Linda Schadler, connects Langevin’s appointment with a transformative moment at the University. “An expert, cross-disciplinary leader like Dr. Langevin will create impactful research opportunities and partnerships for our students, faculty, and staff,” she said.

Langevin joins the Osher Center at a dynamic time, as it has recently announced: 

• Through a generous gift, they are establishing the Susan Lewis Levy Whole Health Cancer Program with partners at UVM Cancer Center.
• It is the lead track partner at See Change Sessions’ “A New Hope for Health Care: Prioritizing Prevention, Living Healthier, and Spending Wisely,” which convenes experts to address the sector’s challenges through this approach.
• The Osher Center is also exploring iterative models of its nationally acclaimed Comprehensive Pain Program (CPP) for specific concerns like diabetes and mental health.

The Osher Center is accepting applications through October 1 from across UVM and UVM Health Network for Advancing Whole Health Through Innovative Research grants, designed to support its growing community of Affiliates, as it prepares to welcome Langevin. “Joining the Osher Center at UVM is like coming home on multiple levels for me, personally and professionally,” Langevin said, “and I look forward to working with the Osher team at this pivotal moment.”
