Chair's Message

Welcome to the Network Department of Family Medicine at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine (LCOM). It is my privilege to lead a department that is deeply committed to family medicine and advancing the tripartite mission through compassionate care, comprehensive education, and innovative research. Our vision, “Discovering together – caring, educating, innovating, and thriving,” serves as our guiding principle as we work to advance the health of individuals, families, and communities.

Our department started with a single office in Milton, Vermont in the early 1970s and has grown into the second largest Department in the UVM Health Network consisting of 25 clinical sites with over 230 providers, inclusive of 64 LCOM faculty members. We consist of Divisions of Primary Care Medical Homes, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Urgent Care, and Dental Medicine that span across 6 campus sites, which include the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC), Porter Medical Center, Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC), Elizabethtown, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH), and Alice Hyde Medical Center.

At the core of our department is our commitment to provide equitable, person-centered care. Family medicine is often the first point of contact for patients where we can build meaningful relationships, foster trust, and deliver care that is inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the diverse needs of our communities.

We are dedicated to educating the next generation of family physicians. We have two family medicine residency sites, UVMMC located in Milton, VT and CVPH located in Plattsburgh, NY, as well as a dental residency and hospice and palliative care fellowship. We are committed to providing high-quality training across the educational continuum while fostering a culture of lifelong learning.

Research and quality improvement initiatives that advance the science and practice of family medicine are important to our department. Whether through innovative care delivery models, population health strategies, or conversation science, we embrace change and seek novel solutions to improve health outcomes and community health.

Family medicine is the cornerstone of a strong healthcare system, and our department takes pride in shaping the future of primary care.  We are committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment where physical, mental, and spiritual well-being are valued. I am so grateful to be part of such an amazing department that works together to care for our communities.

Sincerely,
