As part of regular maintenance, on December 17, 2025, all Brightspace course spaces taught in Fall 2023 will be removed from the system. Additionally, any Microsoft Teams associated with these spaces will also be deleted.

What does this mean?

For Brightspace courses in the affected terms, all course content and student data will be deleted. This includes:

  • Any uploaded files (syllabus, course materials)
  • Student communication/interactions (discussion board posts, group activity)
  • Grade center entries
  • Test and homework submissions

Deleted Teams data will include: documents, chats, recordings, and similar materials.

How do I save my Teams and Brightspace data?

There are a number of ways to back up and preserve your course materials. For starters, we recommend you create and download an archive. (Not seeing your course? See this article on how to find your courses in Brightspace.) Next, review the end-of-term checklist for other useful steps, such as downloading your grades for easy access.

You can download your Teams materials by following the steps in this article.

Help & Questions

If you have questions about this process or would like help with any of the above, please contact the UVM Tech Team. Note that faculty are also always welcome to make use of the CTL’s one-on-one consultations.

Will this happen again?

Yes. As part of regular scheduled maintenance, after the beginning of each semester, any course space that was taught more than 6 terms in the past will be deleted. For example, after the end of a spring semester, course spaces that were taught in the spring term two years previously will be deleted. You will be notified each time this regular purging of the system occurs. Teams removals will follow this same schedule.
