Changing Passwords on Domain Accounts

NetID Accounts

Your regular UVM NetID account password cannot be changed using the instructions in this article. Those accounts must be managed through https://account.uvm.edu. If you’ve updated your NetID account password and your domain-joined Windows computer isn’t taking the new password, you may need to connect to the UVM network (or connect to the VPN if you’re off-campus) for your computer to learn the new password.

RDP Password Reset Unsupported

Passwords cannot be reset through RDP. Please ensure that you reset the password for your domain account on your workstation.

Some accounts at UVM have elevated permissions to perform various actions on the Domain. These accounts cannot be reset through https://account.uvm.edu.

Examples:

Account Type Username
Tech NetID.tech
Admin NetID.adm

Change Domain Account Password

Unlike user accounts, the option to change your password within Windows is enabled for Domain-only accounts. You can change your credentials by following the steps below. If you are not on campus connected to the UVM network, connection to the VPN is recommended before completing these steps:

  1. Log into your workstation (a Domain-joined Windows machine) with the account that needs a password change.
  2. After logging in, press ctrl+alt+del.
  3. Click on Change a password.
  4. Enter your current password, a new password, and a password confirmation.

Creating a Secure Password

After entering your new password in Step 4, ensure it meets modern security standards:

  • Length is key: Use 14+ characters or a passphrase of 4+ random words
  • Avoid predictability: Don’t use personal info, common words, or simple patterns
  • Unique for every account: Never reuse passwords across different services
  • Consider a password manager: Securely store and generate complex passwords

Need inspiration for a strong password? You can use online tools like password generators to create highly secure combinations. For more comprehensive guidance on protecting your UVM credentials, see our official resource: Protecting Your NetID & Password.

If you are off-campus, you may need to connect to the VPN.
