Project Overview
In 1977 a statewide survey was conducted to determine the intensity of maple decline and mortality in Vermont's sugarbushes and to identify possible causes of decline. During the summer of 1985, 54 sugarbushes were revisited to determine if changes in tree condition had occurred since the 1977 survey.
Objectives
Determine the extent of sugar maple decline and mortality in Vermont sugarbushes. Determine whether maple health changed between 1977 and 1985. Identify site and disturbance factors associated with decline and mortality, including the impact of a forest tent caterpillar outbreak.
