Burlington--Accidents happen on farms every day in the United States, with a number of those involving children.
To help them become more safety-savvy, University of Vermont Extension 4-H will sponsor two free Youth Farm Safety Days in July in cooperation with the Northeast Agriculture Education Foundation and Co-operative Insurance Companies, Middlebury. Sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are open to all youth, ages 10 to 16, from Vermont and neighboring states.
Dates are July 14 at the J & R Family Farm in Troy and July 18 at the Newmont Farm in Bradford. Lunch will be provided.
Participants will learn basic farm first aid and how to properly operate a fire extinguisher. Other hands-on workshops will focus on ATV/UTV, tractor and machinery safety and how to stay safe around farm animals.
To register for either session, go to https://go.uvm.edu/safety. Everyone who registers in advance will receive a free safety vest. The deadline to register is July 8.
To request a disability-related accommodation to participate, contact Martha Manning at (802) 524-6501, ext. 449, or (800) 639-2130 (Vermont calls only) or martha.manning@uvm.edu by July 8.
