University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H is hosting a free workshop on August 18 for kids, ages 8 to 18, interested in learning about hydroponics, the science of growing plants without soil by using nutrient-rich water solutions.

The workshop will take place from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Ferndean Farm in Woodstock. The farm grows a wide range of fresh produce year-round, including microgreens, leafy greens, herbs and edible flowers.

Registration is required as space is limited to 15 participants. To register, go to https://go.uvm.edu/quantum-seed.

Workshop participants will explore how hydroponics works by seeding, transplanting and harvesting vegetables. They also will learn about the ancient history of hydroponic growing and the science connection to food access and climate and help deliver fresh produce to a local food shelf.

Participants are asked to bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes as activities will take place both outside and in the hydroponics labs. Gloves and snacks will be provided.

To request language interpretation, translation assistance and/or a disability-related accommodation to participate, please contact UVM Extension 4-H Educator Camille Kauffman at (802) 780-0074 or camille.kauffman@uvm.edu by July 28.
