John C. "Jack" Lawlor and Thomas Rogers, both senior lecturers in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, each received special awards at the Vermont State Finals of the 31st Annual MATHCOUNTS competition at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont on Saturday, March 29, 2014.
Jack Lawlor, who is retiring from UVM at the end of the academic year, was recognized for his service to MATHCOUNTS every year beginning with the very first competition held in 1984. Jack has been instrumental in organizing and running the MATHCOUNTS Northwest Vermont Regional Finals hosted at UVM each February, and the State Finals hosted at VTC each March. Jack served as Regional Coordinator for many years, and as State Coordinator from 2009 - 2014.
Tom Rogers has volunteered at the Regional and State MATHCOUNTS competitions for the past 10 years. Tom has served as a grader and CountDown Round official, and most recently as Head Grader.
MATHCOUNTS is a national competition for middle school students, in which students compete both individually and in teams to solve challenging mathematics problems. Winners from the State Finals go on to compete at the National MATHCOUNTS Finals.
