Winners of the 56th Annual Vermont High School Prize Examination in Mathematics were honored at the annual Math Day awards luncheon hosted by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics on May 20, 2013. Prizes were awarded to the top eight students in Vermont, as well as the top two students in each of five regions of the state.
Senior Lecturer Larry Kost, Chair of the Contest Committee, says that "Math Day is one of our favorite events of the year. It's a chance for those of us involved in the contest to show our appreciation for some of the state's brightest young scholars and the parents and teachers who support them."
In addition to receiving their awards, contest winners and their guests were treated to the annual Math Day Talk. This year's talk was given by Dr. Josh Bongard, Associate Professor of Computer Science, who spoke on the topic of "Robots: Subjects or Masters?"
The High School Prize Examination, administered by members of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, has been given each year since 1958 and is one of the longest running annual high school mathematics competitions in the US.
