Dr. Ghazanfari specializes in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering and has over 15 years of experience as a researcher, consultant and educator. His research encompasses a mix of theoretical and applied research, using both experimental and analytical techniques, and employs state-of-the-art instruments and innovative methods. Dr. Ghazanfari's research at UVM focuses on (1) geomechanical and geoenvironmental aspects of geoenergy systems (e.g. shallow and deep geothermal systems, shale energy, geological CO2 storage, electrically enhanced oil recovery and non-isothermal unsaturated flow) and (2) geotechnical engineering (e.g. sensors and sensing in subsurface and intelligent compaction of geo-materials, physical and mechanical characterization of extraterrestrial (e.g. Martian, Lunar) regolith). He is UVM's Sustainability Fellow, and the Fellow of Gund Institute for Environment. Since joining UVM in 2013, Dr. Ghazanfari has worked with 6 graduate and over 10 undergraduate students. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering.
