BIO
Bassist/Composer Rob Duguay was born in Toronto, Canada and was raised in Connecticut. Rob graduated from the University of Vermont in 2005 as an International Business Management student but was also the bassist in all of the jazz ensembles including the Latin Jazz Ensemble, the UVM Big Band, and other small groups. After graduating, Rob headed to New Orleans to pursue a Master's Degree in Jazz Bass Performance at UNO but was quickly thwarted by Hurricane Katrina. He fled the storm and ended up studying at William Paterson University of New Jersey under the mentorship of jazz greats such as Mulgrew Miller, Harold Mabern, Vincent Herring, James Weidman, Armen Donelian, Gary Smulyan, and studied bass with his master Marcus McLaurine. During his years in university, Rob studied abroad in both Paris where he performed jazz regularly and also Washington D.C., where he interned at the National Museum of American History under the jazz curator Dr. John Edward Hasse.
Rob has performed in 20 countries, mostly under his own name, and at some of the world's most renowned jazz clubs and festivals. Rob won the ASCAP Award for Composition from the Louis Armstrong Foundation as well as the Warren Vache Sr. Award for Jazz Performance in 2006. Rob has 5 records as a leader, 3 are self-released and 2 are on labels based in NYC. Rob's groups include; SONGEVITY - that has included such luminaries as Abraham Burton, Mark Gross, Steve Wilson, and "Ku-umba" Frank Lacy; the Low Key Trio - that performed a ten year weekly stint in NYC including countless guest artists and challenging repertoire from players such as John Ellis, Lew Tabackin, Bill Saxton, Antoine Drye, Myron Walden and more; and The Outernet - featuring unique arrangements of pop songs and original compositions.
Aside from performance, Rob has been quite active in the business of music and educational outreach. Rob is co-founder of Jazz Generation - a non-profit organization dedicated to generating performance and educational opportunities for musicians and audience members - and About the Swing - a performance driven outreach organization that brings high quality jazz concerts to inner city schools. Through Rob's work both as a performer and educator, he is humbled to have shared the stage with musicians such as Clarence Penn, Mark Whitfield, Wycliffe Gordon, The Mingus Dynasty, Mark Gross, and so many more. As a bandleader, Rob has led groups under his own name at some of the biggest clubs in Mexico, France, England, Italy, Germany, Finland, Latvia, and more.
