At the University of Vermont’s School of the Arts, Program in Music, students have access not only to exceptional musical training, but also to a vibrant pathway toward professional life in the arts. From career-oriented courses to real-world internships, guest speakers, and an exciting new apprenticeship with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, our program helps students build the skills, connections, and confidence needed to succeed in today’s arts landscape. Whether you envision a career on stage, behind the scenes, or in arts leadership, we provide opportunities to explore, prepare, and thrive. 

Career-Oriented Courses

We offer a growing slate of courses designed to prepare students for work in performing arts organizations, education, and creative industries. Students gain practical tools that transfer directly to professional settings.

Internships

Body

Through the CAS Internship program, students may earn academic credit while working with arts organizations across Vermont and beyond. Recent partners include performing ensembles, theaters, recording studios, community music programs, festivals, and education programs. 

Internships are available in areas such as: 

  • arts administration 

  • production and stage management 

  • audience engagement and outreach 

  • marketing and box office support 

  • education and community programs 

Faculty and CAS internship advisors support students in identifying opportunities that align with their interests and goals. 

Careers in the Arts Lecture Series

Body

Each semester, the School of the Arts invites arts professionals to campus to share their experiences and career pathways. Speakers include: 

  • arts administrators and non-profit leaders 

  • composers, songwriters, and producers 

  • recording and sound engineers 

  • arts-oriented business owners and executives 

These events connect students with working professionals and emerging opportunities in the region.

Apprenticeship with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra

Body

Beginning in 2025, the Program in Music will offer a competitive apprenticeship with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Students selected for the apprenticeship will: 

  • perform with VSO 

  • collaborate with VSO musicians and staff 

  • assist with concert planning and production 

  • participate in educational and outreach activities 

  • gain insight into the operations of a statewide professional orchestra 

This apprenticeship offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from Vermont’s leading performing arts organization.
