College of Arts and Sciences

An Entrance Audition is required to declare the Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree at UVM. Applicants are strongly encouraged to audition prior to their first year. However, students are welcome to begin introductory course work in music education while preparing for the entrance audition, with approval from the Program Coordinator in Music Education.

All musicians prepare three contrasting pieces of varying styles, genres, and or eras that demonstrate their technical skills and musicianship on a primary instrument. Repertoire should reflect an intermediate to advanced skill level for high school and early collegiate players on a primary instrument. Singers should prepare at least one selection in a language other than English. Applicants may use the B.A. Audition Requirements by Instrument as a guide, but are encouraged to perform repertoire of multiple genres and styles (i.e. jazz / classical).

Optional: Supplemental materials that reflect your musicianship such as original compositions and electronic music performances are welcomed and will be considered in addition to the standard application and audition. Include a statement claiming the work as your own and providing context about the materials, i.e. source material, process, inspiration, use of technology, additional contributors or collaborators to the work etc. Please send supplemental files to music@uvm.edu with the subject line “audition supplements [your name]”.
