B.A. Music - History and Literature | Program in Music | The University of Vermont(title)

The B.A. in Music offers students the opportunity to study performance, composition, theory, and technology in a liberal arts setting.

History and literature students take advanced music theory courses, seminars on individual composers (ranging from Bach to Duke Ellington), and lectures on music from particular historical eras (Baroque, blues, 20th century). They learn advanced music theory and have a strong emphasis on private lessons and performing ensembles each semester. The capstone requirement is a senior music history project consisting of directed readings and research under a music history faculty member.

Audition and Declaring the Major

Students wishing to declare a music major concentration in music history and literature must first pass an entrance audition on an instrument or voice. In order to complete the major, all students must attain intermediate level on a single instrument or voice;  and must pass a junior standing examination, usually at the end of the sophomore year.
