Annual Events

From a poetry-themed pizza party to Honors Day and our Student Symposium, English and FTS students and faculty gather as a community at our annual events.

Pizza and Poetry

Body

Each fall we invite students to a free pizza lunch in beautiful John Dewey Lounge, whose walls are decorated with poems written by both students and faculty. Students chat informally with faculty, get pre-registration advising, and enjoy the close-knit community of the English department.

English/FTS Symposium

Body

The spring symposium is the highlight of our academic year, where English and FTS students (along with students in some related fields) present abridged versions of their papers and creative work on dynamic panels throughout the day, and esteemed faculty join the audience. Outstanding papers, poems, stories, and films make the day unforgettable, and the English department gives alumni-funded awards for the best symposium presentations in Cultural Studies and Criticism.

Honors Day

Body

In April, students and their families are invited to a ceremony and reception celebrating the accomplishments of seniors graduating with honors, as well as the winners of our nine prizes for outstanding coursework or overall distinction in English or Film and Television Studies.
