Movie theater with flood debris covering sidewalk in front

"A place where I watched “Avengers: Endgame” with my family and “Joker” with my closest friends: gutted due to the heavy rain days prior. The Capital Theater was one of many businesses filled with whirling fans and disaster relief workers following the flooding in Vermont. When it became safe to traverse central Vermont, my role as a journalist kicked in. While my goal of this expedition was Cabot, I felt drawn toward the muddied downtown of a place I frequented for creemees and Spikeball on the state house lawn. Trekking down the streets of Montpelier felt dystopian. The fans were loud, but the pungent aroma of damp belongings on the street was louder. As I walked down the center of the road, my gut sank as I approached the piles of once-red theater chairs. The journalist in me said to take a picture, the local in me said to cry. My duty was to report on the floods for the Cabot Chronicle, so I had to hold my composer. Holding my breath – I snapped the photo. I chose this photo because it represents the range of destruction the floods brought this summer. Yes, financially this was a blow, but it also demolished a place where the community was brought together. However, Vermonters are strong. They work, live, and play as a community, and that community will gather once again after a brief intermission."
