"Tomorrow's leaders will have to navigate the critical transition to a sustainable society. At the Gund Institute, students develop the skills and knowledge needed to lead this transition. They interact constantly with faculty from across the UVM campus. They work together to conduct research, design solutions to real-world problems, and put their findings into action. The resulting combination of systems thinking, research expertise, interdisciplinary perspective, and practical application sets our students up to succeed in a range of workplaces, and in improving the world."

The Gund Institute trains students with the tools and understanding necessary to lead the transition to a sustainable world. As a hub of transdisciplinary research, we provide students a unique experience at the interface of natural and social sciences.
Students work closely with Gund Fellows, who include faculty in Ecology, Natural Resources, Economics, Business, Public Administration, Engineering, and many other disciplines. Students are exposed to a wide range of expertise, perspectives, and techniques through course offerings, weekly discussions and seminars, and research mentoring.Education Programs
Gund Fellows supervise Masters and Doctoral students in pursuing transdisciplinary research within several departments at UVM.
We offer a Certificate in Ecological Economics available to UVM Graduate students and to anyone pursuing continuing education.
We host problem-based learning courses called Ateliers, in Vermont and worldwide.
Who Studies at the Gund
Gund students arrive as biologists, linguists, economists, businesspeople, sociologists, lawyers, and architects. They leave with an understanding of how these disciplines intersect, and how to work across them to confront global and local environmental challenges.
