BRIEF RESUME

May 2000

PERSONAL OBJECTIVES

To contribute to the common good by facilitating economic activities which are ecologically sustainable

To be directed in this endeavor by sound research, innovative thinking, respectful participation, and a sensitivity to the potentially threatening nature of change

PREPARING MYSELF FOR CHANGE

My previous role of CEO was enormously challenging and fulfilling in many ways. However, I developed an interest in ecological economics several years ago as a result of reading some of the work of Herman Daly. This interest persisted and grew and led me to refocus my activities. Since stepping down from my corporate role at the end of 1999, I have engaged in some self-directed study of ecological and environmental economics, attended the Globe 2000 Conference on Business and the Environment, and attended a course on Climate Change.

While acknowledging my need for continued education across a broad range of related issues, I feel my 30 years of professional experience have provided me with a variety of relevant skills, including:

Business Experience

1981-1999 Founder, President and CEO of Corporate Health Consultants ltd, Canada's largest provider of behavioral health services, with annual revenues in 1999-2000 of approximately $30m, and recipient of the Financial Post's " 50 Best Managed Private Companies " for 1997.

CHC is a nation wide operation with over 50 offices across Canada, serving provincial and Federal governments, many public sector organizations, and hundreds of private sector employers, many among the largest in the country. My responsibilities as CEO brought me in frequent contact with senior management in both the public and private sectors, as well as various professional groups, many unions, and the media.

In 1997, CHC was sold to Magellan Health Services, North America's largest behavioural health operation. I declined the opportunity to continue my role with CHC, and retired from my position at the end of 1999.

    1. President of the Applied Research Consulting House ltd, which provided programme evaluation and research services to governments and public sector agencies

1978-1981 Senior Partner and Executive Director of Youtec Consulting, which provided programme evaluation and research services in the area of children's mental health and related services.

Academic Experience

    1. Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto

    1. Director, Research and Evaluation, Thistletown Regional Centre for Children and Adolescents, Rexdale, ON

    1. Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, McMaster University, Hamilton,ON

    1. Lecturer, Department of Psychiatry, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON

In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate students, my academic career was heavily research oriented. I was the recipient of numerous research grants from such bodies as the Medical Research Council of Canada, National Health Grants from the Federal Department of Health, the Ontario Ministry of Health, the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation, and Physicians Services Incorporated Foundation.

These research activities led to dozens of publications in refereed journals and presentations at professional conferences across both Canada and the United States.

One of the major results of this research was the development, along with Drs H Skinner and P Steinhauer of the University of Toronto, of a sophisticated psychometric instrument to measure the mental health functioning of families. This instrument has been translated into several languages and is being used in clinical practice and research studies around the world.

During my academic career I was also the Founding President in 1979 of the Canadian Evaluation Society, a public-private sector association dedicated to the development of programme evaluation as a policy decision making tool. The Society continues to thrive today.
