Course Registration Homework

Before attending your course registration advising appointment, you are required to complete the necessary trainings and homework to ensure you are prepared to make the most of your appointment time. The expectation is that you will have completed a Registration Advising Worksheet (found below in Step 3), which you and your advisor will use during your appointment to finalize your fall schedule.

All students must complete the items below or their course registration appointment may be subject to cancellation. After completing the course registration homework, you will take a quick Pre-Advising Survey (below in Step 3) to confirm your appointment.

Important Note: Placements Tests (FLP & MPA in Step 3) should be completed at least 24 hours before your appointment!

Step 1: Learn About Your Degree & Advising

Requirements: Components of Your Degree

This video will give you an overview of your requirements as a UVM student in the College of Arts & Sciences. (~2 minutes)

Advising: What to Expect & How to Prepare

This video will give you an overview of what to expect from, and how to prepare for, your advising appointment. (~3 minutes)

Step 2: Learn How To Use The Registration System & Look At Classes

Schedule: Review Your Pre-Registered Schedule

Prior to your course registration appointment, we have pre-registered you for a full-time course schedule. Your schedule includes any classes required for your major, as well as additional degree-applicable courses appropriate for a first-year student. You will have the chance to add and/or change classes during your appointment.

To review your pre-registered schedule, log-in to your myUVM account and click the "My Schedule" tab. You will see a weekly overview of your schedule, and if you click each class you can read the full title of the class.

IMPORTANT NOTE: New first-year schedules will be "under construction" between May 29 - June 9, so while you are encouraged to look at your schedule at any time, be sure to check back on June 9th or later for your most up-to-date schedule!

Look Through Class Options: Identify Your Interests

If you need to add or swap any classes in your pre-registered schedule, it's important that you have identified some interests. Take some time to look through this "Class Newspaper" to find classes that interest you. The newspaper is a selection of classes offered this fall that are appropriate for you to consider as a First-Year CAS student. In the newspaper, classes are grouped by their discipline; Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences, and World Languages.

Click here to view the Class Newspaper.

You will be able to make note of your interests on the Registration Advising Worksheet below in Step 3.

Registration Tutorial: Learn How to Register

This video will teach you how to use the UVM registration system. You will need to be familiar with this system so that you can make any necessary schedule changes during your appointment. (~7 minutes)

PLEASE NOTE: You will have an Orientation/Advising ("Register at Acad Advising Appt") hold on your account that your advisor will remove for you the day of your appointment!

Step 3: Complete Pre-Advising Appointment Homework

Set-Up Microsoft Teams: Log-in/Test Your Account

Your advisor will connect with you for your appointment using Microsoft Teams, and you are expected to be on a computer with access to your myUVM account. It is important that you have set-up and tested your Teams account before your appointment to make sure it works. Be sure to sign into Teams with your UVM e-mail address!

→ Click here for Microsoft Teams instructions. Please do a test run of Teams to make sure your camera and audio work.

Take Placement Tests: FLP & MPA

Students taking Calculus, Spanish or French are required to complete the appropriate placement test before their appointment. Not sure if you need to take them? Check your New Student Checklist! It will tell you whether or not the FLP/MPA are required for you based on your major. If you still aren't sure, check the FLP & MPA flowcharts

Please complete the placement tests at least 24 hours before your appointment!

→ Foreign Language Placement Test (~15-30 minutes to complete)

→ Math Placement Assessment (~60-90 minutes to complete)

Registration Advising Worksheet: Complete Before Your Appointment

All students are required to complete a registration advising worksheet before their appointment and should have this form available to share with their advisor during the appointment. This worksheet will help you and your advisor make the most of your appointment time.

→ Click here to download the worksheet.

**Pre-Advising Survey: Let Us Know You're Prepared!**

Once you have completed all the required course registration homework, take this survey to let us know. You are required to complete this survey prior to your appointment, or your appointment may be rescheduled.

Click Here to Take the Pre-Advising Survey (~1 minute to complete)

We are so excited to work with you!

We understand that this is a lot of information, and even after completing all the steps above, you will have questions! This is expected and there will be plenty of time to get answers over the summer and on through the start of the semester. Identifying your interests and understanding how you will work those into your degree plan will be a learning process. The above steps are meant to give you context for your very first advising appointment. After completing everything, you should be equipped with a general familiarity of your degree requirements, a list of interests and questions (worksheet), and excitement for the journey ahead! We look forward to talking with you soon.
