Path to Medical School: Acceptance Rates to Medical School

The overall national rate of acceptance to allopathic medical schools is ~40-45%. The rate of acceptance to osteopathic schools is more difficult to pinpoint for various reasons although ~40% of applicants to osteopathic schools matriculate into a DO program. There has been a sharp increase in total available spots as the number of osteopathic schools has increased by 50% in the last 5-10 years.

The Career Center tracks medical school admission statistics for those students and alums who have participated in the Committee Letter Process (CLP). The CLP offers excellent preparation for the application process itself and provides a comprehensive and holistic letter of reference to medical school admission committees. Over the last 4 years, the rate of acceptance to MD schools for CLP participants has averaged 64%.

Some UVM-affiliated individuals do not use the CLP during application to MD or DO school, often because of not meeting eligibility requirements for CLP. The admission rate for these individuals is generally considerably lower.
