HPP Overview
Modeled after the centralized application processes and shaped by insight gained from discussions with medical school admissions personnel, HPP promotes intentional growth and deep reflection. Participants will create a robust portfolio reflecting their academic accomplishments, community engagement, healthcare exposure/experience, research endeavors, core competencies, and motivation for the profession. The process of reflecting on one’s commitment and fit for the profession enhances the application, helps define one’s ethical framework, and promotes an honest self-awareness that supports continued growth.
Enrolling in HPP
Formal participation in HPP is designed for juniors, seniors, and alums who are planning to apply to medical school in the upcoming cycle. The resources and information on the HPP Brightspace site are also likely to be of organizational help for those who still have 1-2 years before likely application.
Please complete the Form again within six months of your anticipated medical school application so that the pre-health advisor has a complete list of likely applicants
HPP Review Appointment
HPP Review appointments with the premedical advisor are available from January through June and can be self-scheduled through Handshake. The feedback provided will help candidates assess the strength of their candidacy and provide suggestions for continued development of the application materials. Aim to complete the reflections and submit the requested documents as early as possible (January – March is recommended).
Submitting Your Application
After participating in the Health Professions Portfolio process, you will be well-equipped to submit a timely application (ideally by June of the application cycle) to one or more of the relevant centralized application services (CAS):
Application Services:
- The American Medical College Application Services (AMCAS) is the centralized application system for allopathic (MD) medical schools
- Osteopathic medical schools use the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS)
- Nearly all Texas schools use the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS)
While requirements vary among the three CAS, the application will require submission of:
- An official transcript from all institutions of higher education in which you have taken a course
- Official MCAT scores
- Personal Statement
- Information about your relevant experiences (e.g., club involvement, volunteering, paid work, research, shadowing)
- Letters of Recommendation from faculty and from work supervisors
Secondary applications: In the 1-2 months after submitting your primary application to the CAS, medical schools will request additional essays and information. These need to be completed promptly, within a few weeks of receipt
Interviews
Schools have different timelines for interviewing candidates. You may receive invitations starting in late August through March. Prepare for interviews by staying curious about the field, reflecting on your experiences and goals, practicing how you tell your story. The HPP on Brightspace includes a module with resources to help you prepare for standard interview as well as MMIs (multiple mini interviews).
